A New Building for NWSCC’s Cosmetology Program
This was a new 8,844 sq. ft. building for Cosmetology, located on Northwest-Shoals Community College’s Muscle Shoals Campus. The facility includes programs such as Cosmetology, Nail Technology, and Esthetics/Massage. The new building also houses various classrooms, laboratories, a retail area, faculty office, conference room, restrooms, and auxiliary space.
Aho Architects has completed 32 projects for Northwest-Shoals Community College.

Interesting Fact
The Facility was one of the first we designed and constructed with an ICC-500 Tornado Shelter. This provides a hardened 1,000 s.f. space capable of withstanding a 250-mph tornado (EF-5) and provides protection for all building occupants. Aho Architects was praised for how well the shelter was integrated into the design. While special signage and features such as concealed safety doors and window shutters make it clear there is a shelter present, esthetics and the quality of the teaching/learning environment do not suffer. The space is highly protective without seeming like a bunker.
