LSCC $30M Renovations
Renovation of Seven Buildings (CARES Act, HEERF)
Lawson State Community College | Birmingham and Bessemer Campuses
COVID-19 Response and Facility Renovations at Lawson State Community College
Lawson State Community College utilized $30 million in HEERF and local funds to renovate seven buildings with the help of Aho Architects. These changes allowed the College to continue delivering instruction and preparing students for careers in health professions and other essential services safely. The funding required a rapid design (4.5 months) and construction turnaround, which our team successfully achieved. While the primary focus was on enhancing safety, this project also offered a unique opportunity to modernize and extend the life of 50-60 year old facilities. Improvements included better safety, accessibility, instructional support, technology, aesthetics, energy efficiency, and integration with a more modern campus esthetic.
Aho Architects has completed 27+ projects for Lawson State Community College.

Interesting Fact
By staying actively engaged as a team throughout the construction process, we met the funding deadline and completed the project under budget. For instance, we saved $409,072.75 by finding a craftsperson to match and restore the existing terrazzo flooring instead of replacing it.
